AfricaFiles' programmes and website are independent, and not subsidized by any government, foundation, or company. Although 95% of the work is done by about 30 volunteers, we subsidize some African writers, a web tender and a part-time administrative staff person.

In order to make the whole service available as widely as possible, including to subscribers in Africa, we do not charge for membership. However, we suggest a voluntary subscription from those who can afford it:
